The standard origin story of computing fits on a poster: a few inventors, a few garages, mostly one country, starting around 1940. It is not exactly false — those people existed — but it is radically incomplete. Computing was also built by wartime codebreakers whose work stayed secret for decades; by the women who did the actual programming when programming was considered clerical; by engineers, mathematicians, and manufacturers on every continent; and it rests on something far older, because Indigenous communities in Canada and around the world were encoding, storing, and transmitting information in sophisticated systems for millennia before electronics existed — and are building today’s technology right now, from language revitalisation apps to networks serving remote communities.
Questions worth arguing about:
- Why do origin stories shrink to a few famous names? Who benefits when the story is small — and what does everyone else lose?
- Early programming was largely women’s work, low in status. Then the field became prestigious, and male-dominated. What changed — the work itself, or only who was welcome to be credited for it?
- Inventing a processor counts as innovation. What about building it, testing it, documenting it, teaching it, translating it into a new language or a new community? Where is the line between “innovator” and “helper” — and who has been drawing that line?
- Timelines of computing usually start in the 1940s. What has to be ignored to make that the beginning — and what would a timeline look like that took information systems, not electronics, as the subject?
- The research is the activity: find one real innovator in digital technology from an Indigenous community or another community the standard story leaves out — local, Canadian, or global. Verify the story with two independent sources, then bring it to class. We are building the bigger poster together.
